Building Manufacturing Operations From The Ground Up

Stephen N. Herndon has a genuine appreciation for the discipline of building and rebuilding industrial operations. For him, taking a plant from concept to full capacity, or restoring a struggling facility to profitability, is not just a task. It is the work he was made for. He approaches each start-up and turnaround as an opportunity to align strategy, people, and process in a way that delivers measurable, sustained results.

In collaboration with executive teams across steel, fabrication, and renewable energy, Stephen has built a reputation for delivering brownfield plant start-ups ahead of schedule and scaling production with disciplined operating systems. He understands the realities of heavy industry and crafts operational frameworks that address both immediate performance gaps and long-term scalability. His work is not theoretical. It is anchored in KPIs, safety, accountability, and a deep respect for the people who make the product.

Stephen N. Herndon's Story

Stephen N. Herndon’s career began on the plant floor as a young engineer at US Steel Fairfield Works in Birmingham, Alabama, where he managed capital projects ranging from $100K to $80M across pickle lines, hot strip mills, casters, and pipe mill operations. That early grounding in heavy industry, paired with a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Auburn University with a specialization in control systems and power engineering, shaped the operator he would become.

Over the next three decades, Stephen rose through engineering, maintenance, and operations leadership at Tenaris, US Steel Tubular Products, OMK Tube, Lock Joint Tube, and Bull Moose Tube. He went on to lead high-volume operations at Schnitzer Steel, drive enterprise-wide transformation at Quality Machine & Fabrication, and stand up brownfield solar torque tube facilities for Unimacts in Houston and Las Vegas. Today, as Head of Manufacturing at FLEXRACK by Qcells, Stephen is helping build the manufacturing infrastructure behind the clean energy transition, applying the same operational discipline and integrity that has defined his career.
